Sometimes you’ve gotta getaway for family emergency travel. There’s no time to plan ahead when a loved one is given just days to live. And the only thing that’s important is getting there. But what if you are hundreds or thousands of miles away? Some airlines offer you emergency, bereavement or compassion reduced airfares to help you get there at a lower price.
Not only is there an emergency airfare discount, but the airline may get you there quicker for much less. Many of these tickets could give you more ticket flexibility to make changes. And they may be fully refundable.
How I Saved on Emergency Travel
Last month, I had to look into this option myself. I shopped around and found airline ticket prices were sky high. And there was limited availability. Thanks to spring break, which drove up airfares more.
I considered buying a discount carrier’s non-refundable ticket. Then I looked into medical emergency airfares given the situation. I discovered Delta Airlines offers emergency fares. They also had better travel times and availability.
I decided to call Delta. I’m sure glad I did. They gave me a lower ticket price that beat the one on their website and the low-cost airline carrier’s. And it gets even better because this medical emergency ticket has more perks. I had more flexibility to make ticket changes (less fees). And it was fully refundable. You read that right – fully refundable!
I only had to provide the Delta representative with my SkyMiles account, the patient’s name and hospital. Then I booked the ticket. Delta also offers bereavement fares when a family member passes or is near death.
Next time you have a family medical emergency that requires you to travel on short notice, ask about any emergency, compassion or bereavement airfares. Safe travels!
